Maximally, one may give a translation and appropriate comments. Obviously, a full epigraphic treatment requires a distinct roster, but ultimately a different approach ) c 1 B7 see description for A16.136 seal impression if This seal had two registers, the upper one with a seated person and the lower one with a string of birds near a flower. It was rolled twice on a large peg impression (i136).
The iconography in the upper register shows a standing person facing left wearing a short skirt. Behind this figure is an unclear object that may be an animal with a long tail and flower-like petals decorating its back. It is not interacting with the figures on either side. Next is a standing figure facing right in a short skirt holding with the left hand a long object above the head of the seated figure; it may be an instrument for fixing the hair. This figure seated on a stool is facing right and holding with a raised arm a conical cup. In front of this figure is what appears to be a table with a rectangular object with two compartments placed on top. The standing figure facing left is probably an attendant connecting with the seated figure.
The lower register is narrower than the upper one and it is decorated with a series of what appears to be birds and a flower design. This flower is faced by one bird on either side. Both these birds are shown in profile but between them is another bird with a body facing forward but the head in profile facing right. sc The seal design is divided into two registers with a single horizontal line separating them, the lower register is narrower than the upper and has a limited iconography.
The lower register has a series of single elements with a limited space between them. None of them are touching and although two birds are facing the two sides of the flower neither appears to be interacting with the flower. The images are cut into a series of ovals, some longer than the others. Looking at the birds the wings are two lines of ovals positioned along a straight line in the center of a rectangular. The tails however are characterized by two or three longer ovals. The flower too is depicted as a series of ovals and dots in a circle.
The upper register instead is characterized as a drinking scene and the two standing humans appear to be interacting with the seated person holding the cup. st The head of the figure is a rectangle with an interior depression almost the same shape as the rectangle. In the center of this depression is a raised dot for the eye. The nose is triangular in shape and the chin is a point at the end of one side of the rectangle. In the back of the head the rectangle is slightly elongated and thickened to possibly to indicate hair. c 2 B7 A16.109 is part of this composite if two animals standing on their hind legs face each other. The one on the right has a long tail and possibly a design of hair on the body and top of the head so might be a lion. The one on the left has a short tail and slightly rounded lower body and upper part of the legs; this animal is probably a caprid. Between the two are unclear objects and above the heads is an unclear round object. Behind the right animal is a human with a knee length skirt and holding a long spear which is raised toward the animal in front of him. The legs of this figure are positioned to show that the figure is in movement toward the animal and so is clearly part of the combat. sc animal and human combat scene st The heads of the two animals are shown in profile which have a circular or semi-circular shape' the only detail of this profile are the mouths also in profile. The profiles are filled with one eye which has a dot in the center. The animals bodies show a long neck and full body but the legs are thin straight lines as is also the tail of the animal on the right. The human is depicted in a similar manner with a profile head, but the inner part of the head with probably the eye is missing. The arms and legs as well as the weapon are depicted by thin lines. Each figure in the scene is independent and carved in an individual space set aside in the composition for it. An unclear rectangular object separates the two animals and a round unclear object separates the upper part of the animal heads. c 3 if two registers of animal files of different animals walking to the right separated by a horizontal ladder type pattern consisting of two slightly undulating side pieces decorated with triangular patterns. Yhe upper register includes a bearded caprid type animal with long ears and bearded. The animal in front is again a caprid type animal with a short tail, two horns, and a hair pattern on the body. No other animal is shown in this sealing. The head of the human is carved in front of this animal. The lower register, separated from the upper register in a horizontal patterned line which may represent the path the figures are walking on. This register depicts three animals behind a walking human. The first animal on the left has a lion type head, and one leg extended possibly to indicate a walking activity. Next is a caprid type animal with a smaller animal suckling. In front of this pair is the human also facing right who appears to have a short skirt but the rest of the figure is unclear except for the legs and feet. In front of this human is the lion figure and the caprid figure but in this case the suckling animal is not shown in the sealing we have sc Two animal files depicted in two registers with a figure of a tall standing human spanning both registers with all the animals walking behind this figure st The animals are depicted with standing in profile with a large single eye in front view. Their bodies are formed but the lower caprid with suckling animal is slightly undulating and so more detailed than the others; this is also the case of the tail of this animal. The animal legs are slightly formed but the lion for instance has two legs depicted with geometric shapes. All tails are short, even the lion. We only have the lower body and the legs of the human; the legs have muscular portions depicted and the feet give the detail of the arches. c 4 if standing animal facing right with unclear patterns in front and an unclear circular pattern below. Legs and lower bodies of two standing humans facing right but one may be holding behind a long pole which has a straight handle and an enlarged lower end in the shape of a modern paddle. sc animal and human file st The animal is shown with a slightly undulating body and upper legs. The humans have flat feet and a small semblance of knees. i 113 if Human figure facing right with one hand extended to right. It is possible that this figure is shown holding a sword shaped object with v shaped and oval patterns. Above this object is an unclear triangular object. Above this section of the seal rolling is a horizontal line with four straight lines extending upward. st The head of the human figure has a long pointed triangular chaped nose and a large roughly triangular outline for the eye with no dot in the center. i 117 if Reversed lion with long raised tail, one extended paw with five protrusions, a hair pattern on the head. standing human facing right wearing a belt. An unclear object which may be an arm of this figure touches the lion's leg. In front of this figure is a date palm tree with some dates shown. Next to this tree is an unclear object. i 136 B7 see the description for A16c1 i 151 if unclear rectangular object, standing human possibly facing left. i 167 is potters workshop if seated figure facing right with two hands working on a small flat bowl, seated figure facing left bent over the same small bowl with both hands in a working positioned near the bowl. The stool is depicted as a solid square and the figure has a hump at the top of the back. Two restricted neck cylindrical jars are placed in an upside down position on a shelf. Two short parallel lines near the head of the potter facing left may be shelves. Two short parallel lines near the top of the stool have an unclear function. sc The potter facing right has a rectangular head, pointed forehead, nose and chin, a triangular shaped eye with the point of the triangle pointing upward. The second potter also has a rectangular head but with rounded edges; this figure also has a pointed nose and chin. The eye is triangular in shape but the point of the triangle is forward, just behind the eye. The arms of both figures are thin and somewhat elongated, especially the figure facing right. B7 For depictions of other potters in Urkesh glyptic see A1.364 i 172 B7 A16 c3 q 732.1 is This object has two rollings but it is not possible to determine if they are from the same seal or not. The lower rolling was sealed upside down with regard to the upper rolling. Feet and part of the bodies are shown but no heads of the figures on either rolling. if The upper rolling (number 1 in the seal drawing) shows a human leg then an unclear object that covers part of the handle of another object that has a long straight handle with an enlarged end (similar to a modern oar shape. This may be held by the next human figure facing right with possibly one arm depicted. The last figure is also human and facing right.
The second rolling depicts an animal, possibly a bull, and between the legs of this animal a circular object. st The animal and human legs are stick-like with some slightly bent at the knee. Human feet are flat. The animal body has somewhat of an undulating stomach. q 834.1 sc animal human combat if rolled three times but only clear rolling is the top one. Leg of a caprid as if the animal has been pushed down. Rampant lion facing left with body bent and one leg forward as if attacking the animal. Hero facing left and holding dagger toward the lion, reversed horned animal also facing left, legs of a human facing right. st Many pointed details, for instance the first animal foot, the hair on the back of the lion, the nose, neck and elbows of the figure with a dagger. The body of the horned animal is depiced as a long oval. One leg of the human is also a long oval and the other leg straight and thinner than the oval leg. The eye of the reversed animal is roughly triangular with a dot in the center; that of the human is triangular and has no dot. q 845.1 ac animal file if there are only two animals positioned one behind the other along a horizontal line. Following the second animal is part of a triangle with a central dot which may be an eye of a human or another animsl. The horizontal line is attached to a vertical line below the second animal but what the carver depicted is unclear. The ear of the first animal and the tail of the second animal are similarly carved. sc this scene is similarly carved as A16q845.1 in that on the back of the animals there is a series of points probably indicating body hair. In this sealing the hair not only is depicted along the back but also in the beard and below the stromach. The second animal has pointed shapes on the back near the tail and what probably is a beard and all along one straight leg. Only the first animal has an eye preserved and in this case it is triangular with a central dot. q 897.1 if standing human facing right who appears from the position of the feet to be walking; the figure is wearing a knee length garment. Seated figure facing right. The figure is wearing a long garment and is sitting on a stool shown as a square block. One shape in front of this figure might be a straw but the other lines are unclear except possibly a diagonal leg and foot. Behind the first human is an unclear curved shape.
